Windows Phone is effectively dead and we all know it. While the company said it will continue to support existing iterations, Joe Belfiore, Microsoft's VP, revealed that the company has no plans to release new versions of phone hardware or the Windows Mobile OS. However, AdDuplex has posted their monthly market share numbers gathered from their cross-promotional ad network. The report reveals some important stats about a variety of OS information on different Windows Devices.
Based on the report spotted by onmsft, a total of 73.8 percent of Windows Phone owners are still running Windows Phone 8.1, followed by Windows 10 Mobile at 20.9 percent. As far as Windows Phone 8.0 and Windows 7.x users are concerned, both the systems share single-digit usage at 4.1 percent and 1.2 percent respectively. AdDuplex also noted that there hasn't been a significant drop in "overall OS version share."
Further, the report also mentions that with 13 percent of the market globally, the Microsoft Lumia 535 is the most widely used Windows Phone model globally, followed by the Microsoft Lumia 640 at 10.2 percent shares. The Lumia 520, which led the chart in January 2016 with a 12.9 percent share slipped to the fourth place with a 7.8 percent share. Microsoft had announced that it has ended support for Windows Phone. which means that "Windows Phone 8.1 users are no longer eligible to receive new security updates, free assisted support options or online technical content updates from Microsoft for free." " Other services including photo uploads, restoring a device from an existing device backup and the Store will continue to work for at least another 12 months from the end of support, after which time, services will start to be discontinued."
Besides Windows Phone, the AdDuplex data showed a sharp increase in installations of the Fall Creators Update on Windows 10 PCs and Surface devices. The Fall Creators Update was only officially released recently. Microsoft's Windows 10 Fall Creators Update includes a number of new features. The top addition is Windows Mixed Reality, making the operating system compatible with new headsets from PC makers that are in stores. Microsoft is also adding contact integration into the taskbar, and tweaking the design of Windows 10 to include subtle animation effects. This new Fluent Design will include updates to apps, too. Microsoft has released the latest edition to secure over 500 million Windows 10 devices globally.
