PayPal Is Shuttering Its Blackberry, Windows Phone and Amazon Apps

PayPal has announced that it is killing support for its apps on Windows Phone, Amazon Kindle Fire and Blackberry in order to focus more on Android and iOS devices. The company announced that starting June 30, it will shut down support for these platforms. It has also advised users of remaining mobile platforms to upgrade to the latest version, version 6.0, of the app.

According to Venture Beat, the online payment platform said that while it was a difficult decision, it is the right move in order to ensure they are investing their resources in building the very best experiences for their customers. As well as shutting down the apps, PayPal is also urging all of its Android and iOS users to update the apps they use.

CNET notes that the world's largest Internet payment company's withdrawal of support from these platforms underscores the influence Google and Apple exert over the market. The two Silicon Valley giants accounted for around 97 percent of mobile phone sales globally in the first quarter, leaving little justification for developers to back rival platforms.

PayPal VP Joanna Lambert said that as digital payments landscape evolves, the company will continue to make enhancements and innovate to offer users the best possible ways to transfer and manage their money. Users can find the latest version of the app in Google Play and the App Store.

PayPal is discontinuing support for Blackberry, Amazon Fire and Windows Phone apps on June 30, bringing the total number of supported mobile OS down to just iOS and Android. After the said date, Blackberry and Amazon Fire apps will be discontinued and the firm will sunset the Windows app. The San Jose-based online payment company expressed that it was a difficult decision and promises better apps for its remaining two platforms.

According to Tech Times, after June 30, Windows app users can still access the service through Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer browsers. Outlook users, too, can use the add-in tool of the payment service to directly send money from the inbox. Likewise, Blackberry and Amazon Fire users can switch to the mobile web experience. Blackberry users can still use the BBM messaging application to send peer-to-peer PayPal payments.

Apple devices running iOS 8.1 or newer and Android devices running version 4.03 or higher can use the updated app, which provides a simpler way to request and send money. The latest iteration also comes with a new home screen and offers relevant transaction details, as reported by CDA News in February.

PayPal is discontinuing its dedicated app on Blackberry, Windows Phone and Amazon Fire. From the end of June, user of the Internet payment service will no longer be able to use the dedicated apps on these mobile devices. Lambert said the company remains committed to collaborating with mobile device companies, and they apologize for any inconvenience the move may cause their customers.
