So far, the upcoming Elite X3 is the only phone that is expected to arrive with fingerprint scanner, which also doubles as a laptop.

That said, this could be a sign that fingerprint-ready Windows Phones are imminent, showing continued support for the platform. Well, that's about to change.

Unlike high-end smartphones from other manufacturers, Microsoft's premium devices do not come with fingerprint scanner, but feature iris recognition with Windows Hello. At the WinHEC conference this week, Microsoft announced that support for fingerprint scanners will be part of a Windows 10 Mobile update this summer. For instance one of the biggest things that go against the handset is that it runs on Windows 10. The company is now rumored to be working on a new update for the Windows 10 Mobile OS powered Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL devices.

It's not clear how many Windows phone makers will opt for fingerprint scanners, but the first device to support the new functionality will be HP's Elite x3.

Biometrics, a technology that Microsoft has included in 2012, is giving users easy access to systems, services and resources, and older Windows operating systems received Windows Biometric Framework, a set of services and interfaces that brought fingerprint biometric devices support using a set of components. An exclusive Windows 10 Mobile OS is likely to be introduced for the two phones, and it is expected to take things to the next level.
