PayPal To End Support For BlackBerry, Amazon, Windows Phone Apps

In another blow to smartphones creeping along the bottom of the market, PayPal is ending support for Amazon Fire, Windows Phone and BlackBerry devices, as it instead focuses on Apple iOS and Android for app development.

Accompanying the news is a call for customers to update their mobile app before June 30 to version 6.0, which was released in February and emphasized peer-to-peer payments through send and request money feature and balance/transaction history. However, Windows Phone users can still access PayPal through our mobile web experience on Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge browsers.

This has been instructed specifically for all the users of Android and iOS but not the users of Windows, Blackberry phones, and Amazon apps. The good news for Windows Phone users is that they won't be alone in their misery, as BlackBerry is doing the same for BlackBerry and Amazon Fire owners.

"As the digital payments landscape evolves, we will continue to innovate and make enhancements to PayPal's mobile experiences to give our customers the best possible ways to manage and move their money", she added. PayPal says it would prefer to use those resources to create better customer experiences.

It's little surprise that PayPal would ditch support for Windows devices given Microsoft's announcement earlier this month that it's scaling back its mobile business. "We remain committed to partnering with mobile device providers, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our customers", said Joanna Lambert, vice-president of global consumer product and engineering at PayPal, in a statement on the company's website.
