Founded out of Cyprus in 2010, Viber today claims more than 700 million users globally across iOS, Android, Windows Phone, and desktop. All users need to have Viber 6.0 installed for the feature to work and the padlock to show up, which means that you'll probably need to wait a day or two before everyone's app updates on Android and iOS. Taking user's privacy seriously, the Viber app update will now also give users the ability to hide chats from the main chat list.
"Additionally, we've ensured each user has an individual cryptography key associated with his or her device, allowing you to benefit from an added layer of security", says Michael Shmilov, Viber's chief operating officer, in a blog post announcement. "We will continue to make this an ongoing priority as digital communication evolves".
Green Lock: Users also have the option of manually authenticating their contacts by selecting that they are "trusted". BlackBerry also offers a tool called "private chats" that hides the participants' names from view in order to protect against screenshots, and deletes conversations from both users' phones when the chat is ended.
No matter how you feel about encryption, it is good to know that the big players have their users' privacy and security in mind. The breach may simply mean that a user has changed his or her primary phone. Tapping on the red icon will display a tooltip noting that Viber can not verify this number.
Once you choose to hide a specific chat in a group or in a personal conversation, those chats will disappear from your screen, but won't affect the other party. Users will be notified of a message in a Hidden conversation without the text of the message, or who it is from, appearing on the screen.

The new features cover all forms of communication within the app, and Viber said that the encryption and hidden chats update will be rolling out gradually across all platforms in the coming weeks.
