Microsoft's Q3 2016: Surface up and Windows Phone down again

Microsoft posted its 2016 Q3 earnings today, reporting $21.7 in revenue for the quarter ending March 31, 2016.

Software giant Microsoft Corp. "We're trying to validate this story that Microsoft is truly becoming a cloud company, and they're not going to be relying on the desktop computer". Its Azure offering, a competitor with Amazon Web Services allowing businesses to store, compute and deliver data from the cloud, saw a 120% jump in revenue growth over the previous quarter.

Revenue for the Intelligent Cloud segment should come in between $6.5 billion and $6.7 billion.

CEO Satya Nadella is also focused on getting Microsoft's Software-as-a-Service offerings, including its flagship Office 365 and Dynamics CRM, into as many devices - mobile or otherwise - as possible, regardless of operating system.

With all those things missing, that could translate to a Surface Pro 5 that isn't quite as big of a step up from the Surface Pro 4, and if that is the case, then Microsoft may just decide to hold off on releasing it altogether until all the components are ready.

Commercial cloud annualized revenue run rate has surpassed $10B, it said.

While the Windows business was hit by slow PC sales, Microsoft continues to have success getting both businesses and consumers to buy Office as a subscription service.

Beginning May 5, Cricket Wireless is the only US carrier to sell the Microsoft Lumia 650, the first no-contract smartphone in the U.S.to ship with Windows 10 Mobile.

The company's earnings conference call starts at 2:30 p.m. Pacific.

Microsoft also is good at playing up its cloud business.

Windows 10 comes with elegant, built-in apps like Office, Mail & Calendar, Maps and Photos.

In fact, Windows Phone performance was so poor it managed to skew the overall performance of the company's entire devices division; revenue derived from the company's devices division declined by 9 percent year on year. But mobility wasn't a total loss.

Enterprise mobility customers topped 27,000. It's the third straight quarter of triple digit percentage growth. Sales of the newish Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book helped propel a 61% revenue increase.

"Microsoft had an impressive quarter and repeated what they did in prior quarters in the combination of cloud, Azure and Windows", said Patrick Moorhead (@PatrickMoorhead), president and principal analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy.

We got it back down to 10, getting the crowd back into it, and then Russell (Westbrook ) hit two threes back-to-back possessions.
