Windows 10 Mobile Starts Seeding for Selected Windows Phone 8.1 Devices

The company also said that several Windows Phone 8.1 devices which run the Windows 10 Mobile preview may still not get the final version because some of the new Windows 10 Mobile features may not smoothly run on these devices.

This list includes a limited set of Windows Phone 8.1 devices and does not include some devices that are now running Windows 10 Mobile in the Windows 10 Mobile Insider program. MSFT says that it wants to only officially offer Windows 10 Mobile upgrades to devices that can continue to offer a solid experience for the customer. After receiving a lot of flak for supplying an unfinished operating system on the flagship Lumia 950 and 950XL, it kept delaying pushing the update to other Windows Phone 8.1 smartphones. Microsoft has not yet promised upgrades for some older flagship handsets left off the list, such as the Lumia 1020 and Lumia Icon.

It is recommended you create a backup of your phone's settings, apps, photos and messages to the cloud before you go ahead with the update.

With this update, Microsoft is also going to bring pinned tabs (a feature long available in all other major browsers), as well as some copy-and-paste improvements, to Edge as well.

As we noted in our review of Lumia 950 XL, Windows 10 Mobile is very much in its early development stages and often there are hiccups with these flagships. This will be followed by the "push model" where Microsoft will be triggering the upgrade process.

To help you figure out if your phone is eligible to upgrade, as well as which app you can download to check for the update, we've detailed all you need to know. These include a new Start screen, an improved Cortana, better Live tiles, wider app support, Windows Hello and Continuum (last two require specific hardware).

Upgrading to Windows 10 is a bit different than checking for updates.
