Microsoft backtracks on Windows 7 support deadline
"Select" is the operative word. It is well known that Android devices are not updated timely unless they are a Nexus device but Microsoft promised Windows phone users that they would not fall into this scenario. After that date, Microsoft and its computer-making partners will not guarantee that they will revise device drivers to support those editions of Windows on newer hardware. However, Microsoft has not included these handsets in the list of mobile phones that are now eligible to receive the update.
Microsoft said it was pushing back the end of support "to help our customers purchase modern hardware with confidence, while continuing to manage their migrations to Windows 10". This is particularly important on mobile; build 14291 is available for (some) phones, too, and instead of a hamburger menu in the top left of the screen-inaccessible in one-handed operation-major navigation elements are now placed in an app bar along the bottom of the screen. If you have a third party device, such as an LG Lancet, Yezz Billy 4.7, or HTC One M8, things could still change for you.
Typically, unsupported Windows software doesn't get security updates, leaving systems potentially vulnerable to attacks.
Following its release of an updated Twitter for Windows 10 app today, Microsoft is expected to finally come out with Windows 10 Mobile tomorrow. For example, Windows Hello facial recognition, which allows users to log into their devices with their faces, requires an illuminated infrared camera sensor that is not standard issue on most Windows Phones. Well, if you upgrade your device through the Release Preview ring, you'll continue to see new cumulative updates until at least June when the Redstone update is released.
The Maps app has also ditched its bad hamburger menu. The company has been struggling to find space in the overly saturated markets of mobile phones but it knows that if they keep themselves restricted to a niche, eventually they will break through into the markets and find space for themselves. This would mean that the user's Windows Update settings may trigger the upgrade automatically. The companies stated in their respective post, that features have been added to the app to enable the users to share and discover content impeccably. Algorithms have also been improved to provide closer and better search results. On that occasion, the company released the list of handsets that are going to be receiving the update, but did not at the time clarify whether the list was final or not.
